We are well into spring wahoo and on the spring equinox (23rd September) I set myself the challenge and focus to detox my life......spring clean, send off to the charity shop, de clutter and simplify my life. In all aspects. Seems like a mammoth task for a goal of simplifying!! :)
Since then i’ve had a good clear out of my clothes and cupboards. A first draft anyway.......when i'm feeling ruthless (currently slightly fragile on a detox - more on that later) I will give it another go!! I now have a bag of clothes for the charity shop and my cupboards have more space. I’ve realised that of all my belongings i tend to stick with and use the same 20%, like the same pieces of jewellery, a few of the same clothes. Partly because i haven’t been able to see what i actually have in the cupboards and partly because i think i have too much stuff. Way more than is needed to live..........so I have pledged the following:
- Buy less - the thought of having to look after and store stuff is weighing heavy. What do we actually need to live hey?
- With clothes shopping, it has to be a need and not a want (yes mum i am finally listening to you) a classic / chic piece (just like the french) that will last and not go in and out of fashion! My new sister (brother’s fiance) is also going to take me charity shopping as she is a pro at it - i’m up for the experience!!! Re-use and recycle!
- I’ve signed up not to buy anything new in October (an online pledge) - and realised just how many times i go looking for something new to buy ever since. So far i have bought a book for a friends little girl and a little book (on how to live sustainably) in the sale so i’ve cheated - but there are quite a few things i’m holding off from buying! Also, at the weekend i went away for a girly stay in the country and of course we went shopping. And i found it was SO relieving to know that i wouldn’t be buying anything anyway so i was just looking. It really was a relief....wierd! Also, I have been really looking at what clothes I have to try and mix it up and wear something I wouldn't usually choose! If it intruiges you, check out more information here.
- To give away (hopefully to a good home) as much as i can because clutter in the house = clutter in the head. Rather be minimalist and light!!!
Despite the above I do love having things that people have given me. I’m sentimental and I love wearing pieces of jewellery for example that reminds me of a person. Love it. And i’m fine with that!! :)
Something else i am doing is listening to the dear man of mine and to simplify how i spend my time. Running from A to B constantly is a total drain. So in the name of simplifying i have started ordering organic veggies online, it’s genius. Really good value for money and i don’t have to run to the shops every other day.
Check out my veggie supplier here.
Overall what I’ve found is that that when you have simple in mind........simple as your goal...... you start naturally taking the easier route!!
What about you, fancy spring clean? How can you simplify? Would love to hear your ideas?

ReplyDeleteJust cannot believe that you've given mum the credit for that advice, she's an absolute nightmare when it comes to buying things she is never going to wear. She came in on saturday with a scarf/poncho sort of thing that she insists will be worn loads but I know the label will still be on it next year and the year after. Buy quality and keep to 'one in, one out' is my advice, mums advice was mine as well. xdad
Dad you are hilarious, I chuckled so much reading this. Isn't it 'do what i say not what i do!?!' Ok, I think that finally after 15 years I can say that I'm ready for all the advice you have to give! You are very wise!! JP understands your pain !! ;)
DeleteI hope you have success simplifying. The only thing I can think of at the moment, is to have a detailed plan and schedule of what you are doing. So you are more efficient and then free up sometime. It's a good idea to try and outsource as much as possible like getting your groceries delivered. :) David
ReplyDeleteDave I think you're on to something. Am going to schedule in all the things i'm doing. As yoda says 'there is no try, only do.' Also think I will try meal planning and see how that goes. JP starts his detox next week so plan plan plan will be the name of the game!!!
