A friend first told me about the five languages of love a few years ago. It sounded a bit corny at first but then i’ve thought about this with a few different people and it clicked....and has been very useful!
So here’s something for you to ponder and try out.....just for fun.
Basically we all express and look for love in different ways. And Dr Gary Chapman (go here for more info) has categorised these expressions into five categories.
Have a think about how you express love to others and how you expect to see expressions from other people.
- Words of Affirmation. i.e. someone complimenting you, telling you they love you, you look nice today etc....
- Quality time – do you devote time to people to show you care? Do you look for others to spend time with you to show their love?
- Receiving gifts – pretty self explanatory
- Acts of service – running errands, making someone dinner etc...
- Physical touch – a hug, reassuring hand, kiss etc....
We may do all the things but generally we will have one, two or three that we look for from others most of the time and a couple that we predominantly use to express our affection. Also note that you may not look for and express love in the same ways.
I noticed with a few people (friends and family members) that they give and look for love by giving presents. So I realised that it was really easy to show I care by just buying them something. Can you see that if I was to offer acts of service i.e. run some errands for the person who looks for gifts to see that someone cares, then they will not respond or feel the same at all as if I sent them a bunch of flowers? It’s useful I think!
How do you express love?
And as a side note...........just because..........I noticed with a few people (friends and family members) that they give and look for love by giving presents.
